Meet Our Personal Trainer Of The Day Anthony Bloomfield

Tell us your story, who are you and how did you start in the health and fitness industry?

My name is Anthony Bloomfield and I am a personal trainer based in Sydney, Australia. I currently study medicine at the University of Sydney having completed a bachelor of science with majors in physiology and pharmacology. When I left school I decided to start a personal training business instead of going to university. I was always entrepreneurial as a kid and was always active having attended a Sports High School so a Personal Training business seemed like the perfect opportunity.

What were some of the biggest mistakes you made when starting out in this industry?

In my first year, I invested too much money on education and not enough on marketing so I had all these new ideas but not enough clients to share them with. Nowadays I have a much better balance.

What is the most absurd excuse you heard from a client and how did you respond to it?

I told a client that they needed to drink more water. They told me they couldn’t because they believed cold water would make them fat. I calmly explained the science behind why this was correct.

What makes your gym/fitness centre different from others?

I am based at the Shangri-La health club in Sydney. It is a hotel gym that has memberships open to the public. Being based in in the Sydney CBD means that all our clientele are corporate workers. The floor space is immaculate with the latest state of the art equipment. We are one of the only hotels that have a squat rack and 40kg dumbbells. In addition, all our clients get access to the trimmings you would expect from a five-star hotel. Luxury pool and spa, sauna, locker room and massage are just some of the amenities we have on-site.

What is your greatest guilty pleasure when it comes to food?

I’m not much of a sweets man so I would go for something like a chicken with skin and stuffed with a potato bake.

What are some of your best exercise/workout tips?

Make good decisions with alcohol where possible. Whilst it can be hard to reject alcohol at a work function surrounded by all your peers it is much easier to avoid having a beer at home alone.

What are your goals or plans this year?

  • finishing medical school
  • expanding to a second location
  • acquiring new personal trainers to join my team.
