It’s a lucky seven for Ben Smith for winning the Reebok CrossFit 2015 Games last July 26, in Carson, California. His female counterpart, Katrin Tanja Davidsdottir was also hailed fittest in the world. Smith and Tanja, representatives of the United States and Iceland respectively, spent a grueling and exhausting day that consisted of three events starting off with Midline Madness, couplet running, and yoke carries. Here’s a breakdown of the events courtesy of WOD Lounge:
Pedal to the Metal 1 featured pegboard climbs, rowing, cycling on an exercise bike and dumbbell squat snatches. Only minutes after Part 1, Pedal to the Metal 2 served up parallette handstand push-ups, rowing, cycling and deadlifts with a pair of monstrous kettlebells totaling 406 lb. for men and 248 lb. for women.
Smith won by 36 points to fellow US representative, Matthew Fraser; while Davidsdottir won by 40 points to second place winner Tia-Clair Toomey of Australia. For the Affiliate Cup team division, team CrossFit Mayhem Freedom won, led by former CrossFit Games winner Rich Froning Jr. who was already a four-time champion when he retired from the individual division last year. CrossFit MilFord came in second, followed by Ute CrossFIt.
The Fittest Man on Earth, Smith, first joined the games back in 2009 when he was just 19 years old. He won third place in both 2011 and 2013 games. It was a close battle between him and Fraser, but in the end, he fought hard for the crown and is now $275,000 richer. Both Davidsdottir and Sigmundsdottir struggled on Pedal to the Metal 1, but Davidsdottir won Part 2 and is now the Fittest Woman on Earth, leaving Sigmundsdottir in second place.
