In order to be your own personal trainer it is essential to appreciate and understand the role a personal trainer performs. A personal trainer must have the knowledge of how to implement a safe and effective fitness program to help a client achieve their goals. The ability to inspire and motivate a client is equally important because even the best fitness program is meaningless if it is not adhered to.

With this in mind I would like to outline a step-by-step guide that will help you become your own personal trainer.

Step 1: S.M.A.R.T Goal Setting.

Goal setting is the essential first step that helps us move from where we are now to where we want to be by directing our thoughts, attitudes and actions. A S.M.A.R.T goal is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. When we define our goals with these criteria in mind and commit them to paper our results improve dramatically.

Step 2: Harnessing your Motivation.

After you have defined your goals the path to success requires lasting motivation. Goal setting helps us clarify what we want but finding our motivation involves us asking why we want it. The importance of taking the time to fully explore this question cannot be overstated. A final question, why don’t we want it, is also a powerful tool to help us uncover the self-doubt and negativity that might have prevented us from achieving our full potential earlier.

Step 3: Building your Team

This step refers to the importance of getting the right advice and surrounding yourself with supportive people and environments. To be an effective personal trainer to yourself you need to get the best advice possible on the correct exercises (which ones, how often, what intensity) that will ensure you achieve your goals. Find experienced industry professionals that can teach you the right techniques in order to maximise results and reduce your risk of injury. Getting the right nutrition advice and following a sustainable eating plan rather than worrying about the latest fad diet will also help keep you on the right track.

To realise your peak potential in terms of fitness and health these steps must become part of your normal routine. A good routine will provide supportive structure, encourage good habits and help generate the momentum to keep you on track to achieving your goals.
