Place your shoulders under the two pads and stand erect on the balls of your feet. The heels of both feet should be hanging over the stepping platform. Push yourself up by raising up on both toes. Slowly lower yourself back down, stretching your calf muscles at the bottom of the movement. Do three or four total sets, taking a half-minute break between sets. This leg press exercise can also be performed on a leg press machine while seated. Simply press the platform up then bring it back down.

Seated calf raises work the soleus muscle in the lower leg, which lies directly below the ball or gastrocnemius. Place the appropriate weight plates on the machine. Sit down and place both knees underneath the knee pads. Lower the weight down using just your calves, then raise it back up. Do three of four sets of 10.
